Sucia Island Rendezvous, July 24 - 25, 1999

by Ann Erickson

Wow, a true international rendezvous under fairly fair skies. Shallow Bay had boats from all over, twelve all together. Here's the list: Bill and Karen Dean and family on their Searunner 40, Seafire, John Hall and family on F- 27, Trill, Larry Falter and daughters on Cross 45, Frolic, David Miller and crew, Digger Dave Bursteiner on F-27, Drum, Wayne and Ann Erickson on F-27, Almond Joy, and, yes, Harry and Mary Abbott were there with their shiny new blue F-9A, Folding Fangle. From out of town came Peter Lucas, clear from North Bend, OR, on his F-27, Odyssey, Mike and Eileen Seals, Bellingham, on F- 31, Manu Ara, and from Portland, Claude Jenkins and his granddaughter on F-27, Capria. We had all these, plus three more boats from the British Columbia Multihull Association. Two Crowther Buccaneer 33's, Wingspan with Ron and Maja Tomas on board and Blue Tango skippered by Glen McDonald, and Colin Haigh on his F-9AX, Mango. There were a bunch of passengers too. I never did get an accurate head count, but there was a bunch, about 30 I'd guess. All these gathered together for the Hogshead Trophy Race. There was a race, about half the boats went around the island. However, there was some confusion at the  start. I will let someone doing a race report explain it all to you. There was great sport, hooting, hollering and horn blowing and a good time was had by all. The Canadian's have found a good little piggy that they are having made into a trophy, so there will now be a perpetual Hogshead Trophy in Vancouver as well as Seattle. In a nod to the Hogshead Races of old, where they roasted a pig on the beach, NWMA commissioned a roasted pig from a Chinese Restaurant, put it on ice and delivered it for dinner. We all ate on that thing for two days, along with an astounding assortment of salads and pastas, sweet corn, desserts and popcorn and marshmallows which came in a steady flow from nooks and crannies of boats. We had the picnic shelter by Shallow Bay reserved for the weekend and there was someone in it most of the time.

Picnic shelter at Sucia The club reserved the picnic shelter at Sucia for the weekend and it became a general meeting place for people as they went for walks. Three evenings potluck dinners and campfires were held here.

Honored and delicious guest This was our honored and delicious guest at the Sucia Rendezvous. With a nod to the good old days of the Hogshead Race, the club arranged for delivery of a barbequed pig to share among us all. He was the main course two nights running. We did not give him a name!

British Columbia Multihull Association member Colin Haigh’s F9AX, Mango Here is British Columbia Multihull Association member Colin Haigh’s F9AX, Mango. We were pleased to have several BCMA boats in attendance.

Bill Dean, Searunner 40, Seafire Bill Dean, Searunner 40, Seafire, has built two sailing dinghies ostensibly to teach his children to sail. He carries them both on board as his boat holds so many people that he can often use two. Here Bill is helping a youngster into a boat and Wayne Erickson gives the other a test sail. The big kids had as much fun in them as the little kids!

F-27 Drum, F9A Folding Fangle, F-27 Almond Joy, and Buccaneer 33 Blue Tango Four more boats at anchor in Shallow Bay, Sucia Island, F-27 Drum, F9A Folding Fangle, F-27 Almond Joy, and Buccaneer 33 Blue Tango, a BCMA boat. We had a total of 12 multihulls at this rendezvous.

This is a 55 Ford pick-up and his brand new F9A, Folding Fangle. It really isn’t named that, but he hasn’t named it yet so that’s what we’re calling it.
