Once upon
a time, wandering trailer sailors gathered at the headwaters of Dyes
Inlet to share camaraderie, camp, swap stories, and sail small multihulls.
This year’s transcendental gathering on July 20-21 included a flock of 3
meters, a Windrider, 2 Rave hydrofoils, Slats 22 proa, Fulmar 19 tri,
NACRA 5.3 cat, Tramp tri and a couple of monomorans.
Greg Jacobs and his wife Donna were gracious hosts, allowing us to
descend upon their red roofed seaside home in Silverdale. Tents sprouted
like weeds all over the back yard with a view of the bay. Children were
shooed out of deeper water on a variety of water toys while sails were
assembled and boats launched.
The 3 meters held their World Championships on Saturday with 5 boats
participating. They are quicker than they look. We started after them
with the Tramp to get a few photos as they rounded the buoys. A MOB drill
to recover a hat on the first leg let them get too far ahead to catch.
Charlene Carpenter and Bob Riggle brought up At Last, a Corando 25,
from Bremerton for the day. Larry Gill on Gone With the Wind, Tashiba 36,
arrived late Saturday evening from Shilshole. Larry had a blast crewing
on the NACRA Sunday.
Perfect weather kept the wind from the North both days, allowing for
easy approach to the beach to exchange crew and head back out again.
Chris brought over his lime green Rave on Saturday. The wind speed was
just enough to tease the potential of the hydrofoil. With a whoop and a
holler, it finally popped up for a fast reach across the bay.
Scott
Bushnell and family brought over Wayne's demo Windrider. A pretty boat with
white, blue and yellow sails seemed to get along quite nicely on the
gentle breeze.
The traditional spaghetti dinner at Spiro’s started late as usual. It
is hard to get everyone off the water while the sun is shinning. Diane
and Mark Olsoe joined Donna Moore, Greg Jacobs, Donna Sanford, Jennifer,
Charlotte, and myself for wine and pasta.
Sunday got off to a slow start due to low tide in the morning, but the
winds picked up in the afternoon and continued the fun from Saturday with
fewer boats and more crew.
My daughter Jennifer and her friend Charlotte enjoyed the trapeze on
Tim Horton’s NACRA, faster, faster, ffaasstteerr...
Much thanks to crew: Stephen, Toni, Bryce, Taylor, Derek, Diane, Mark,
Cathy, Laura, Sara, Larry and a few others who did not sign Tigger’s log
for helping to make this a memorable weekend.
