Club Meeting Minutes October 19, 2001

Submitted by Linda Adams

  • George Lefler welcomed visitors John and his son Jake to the club meeting. Their boat is a constant camber 26. Everyone welcomed Harry and Mary back from down under and extracted promises of slides and stories.
  • Officers positions open to volunteers until November elections are: race fleet captain, rear commodore. Web curator will be open in December. Scott McCulley was encouraged to continue his interest in becoming web curator.
  • George will update the 1980 version of the by laws and post on the web site 10 days before the next meeting.
  • Membership dues: pay on or before Nov. meeting to be included in the next roster booklet.
  • Board meeting the 1st weekend of Nov at Marty and Neil Bryant's hanger.
  • Greg announced the next speaker will be a marine biologist addressing boat bottom problems.
  • Secretary's minutes will be published on the web site after they have been approved by members attending a general meeting.
  • Treasurer, David reports we have $4,200 in checking, 65 active members and 10 renewals to date. David will order more burgees for new members.
  • Members present approved of Mark's suggested the purchase of 2 cruising books at $30 each for the library. Mark will develop and present in general terms ideas for Quick and Dirty Contest.
  • Race Fleet Captain duties are to organize and promote club participation in local races that are designated for the Club Championship, disseminate racing info to sailors, provide encouragement and assistance to members who want to get involved in racing.
  • Web curator, Patrick invites the half of the membership that don't have a picture or page on his site to contact him.
  • Newsletter Editor: Ad policy will be finalized by Neil. When replying to Marty she asked that the reply be made directly to her not the list server.
  • It was decided to leave the list server operating the way it has been. Replies to an email on the list server does not go directly to the sender but to the list server for public viewing.
  • Six proposals for the use of club funds were discussed:

1) Tom Spears knows of a 17' Cat that needs repairing but could be put into sailing condition and displayed/used at a location like the Center for Wooden Boats.

2) David Miller reported on buying equipment for a crash box that the club could rent to sailors.

3) Moving the club meetings to a Sand Point site where there would be access to a clubhouse, water and boat storage.

4) Host activities that educate and promote safety. Gather and disseminate information on safety such as where to rent EPIRBS and survival suits.

5) Host a sailing symposium. Club funds could be used as seed money for a 3 day long symposium at Port Townsend

6) Do nothing until a need arises.

  • The club's position regarding multihull safety was discussed. Neil, George and David discussed sending out a mass mailing to all multihulls with PHRF rating in hopes to get feed back before the November PIYA meeting. The George read his original Addendum to Section 5.9 and it was accepted as a stance, not a rule, to be presented if appropriate at the PIYA meeting. It may be further refined on the list server.
  • From newsletter, edited by Bad Editor:

PIYA section 5.9 Lifesaving equipment-Life Rafts Addendum. Multihulls only Required. Category I, A (revised) Cat II, Not required) for Cat III and Cat IV "Multihulls only. An "Emergency Gear Container" that is accessible when the boat is floating upright or an inverted position. This container must be securely mounted onto the boat, or securely stored inside a hull that has an escape hatch. It is recommended that the emergency gear should include a knife, VHF radio, GPS, EPIRB and approved flares as noted in section 5.8 above. Additional emergency equipment could include a first aid kit, spare batteries, tools (such as keyhole saw and wire cutters) and fresh water and food rations sufficient to sustain a crew for up to 12 hours."

  • Guest speaker, Ron Gill showed slides and told of his designing, building and cruising his multihull the Nawall.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Adams
