Semiahmoo Bay International Regatta  - 2001

Submitted by
Rae Simpson & Kevin Donohoe
Co-Chairs - The Semiahmoo Bay International Regatta

Nearly everything clicked at the regatta in White Rock this weekend.

The wind gods were exuberant. They offered 25 knots and blue skies on Saturday. Most of the boats sailed the course at or above hull speed. A hole developed in the late afternoon trapping a few boats but they clawed their way through to the finish. Nearly everyone was thrilled with the conditions and course. Most boats finished the courses.

Kim Alfreds' Cheekee Monkey was the fasted boat on the water. He tore up the 26.5 mile course, completing in 3 1/2 hours to win the Multihull Division of the White Rock Cup and take overall line honors. Second and third in the Multihull Division were awarded to Bernd Giese sailing Flying Geese and Mark Gommely sailing Y3.

With a time of 4 hours and 59 minutes for the 26.5 mile course, John Schneider's 'fraid Knot corrected over last years winner Jorgen Busse in Karina to win the Division I Monohulls' White Rock Cup. Schneider also corrected over Gunnar Jonsson in Havoc, and Geno Dellamatia in Focus to win. John and crew celebrated long into the night drinking copious quantities of champagne from the cup. The team of Gormely/Rogers corrected to second place in Jasmina and Karina placed third.

In the 14.1 mile Division II Monohulls, the White Rock Cup went to Rick Pochereva in Nomad VI, with Phil Barnes in Reve and Bill Booth in Flying Cloud placing second and third respectively.

In the 20 boat cruising division, Russ Alfreds - brother of Kim, finished first, correcting over Optical Illusion. Second and third in the 10 mile cruising race were Allan Beard in Muse and Larry Williams and crew in Tourmaline II.

A total of 55 boats sailed on Saturday.

The people came. The band played. The hovercraft were there. The coast guard and auxiliary assisted. Families brought the kids to the beach and played and built boats and painted. Carmella at the Ocean Beach Hotel prepared a spectacular banquet and the party went into the wee hours.

35-40 knots with gust to 50 canceled Sunday racing events. But the free Barbeque in Blaine was well attended. At the end there was not a drop of the beer or a hamburger to be found.

Now if the winds would just ease enough for everyone to get their boats home!

Many thanks to all who participated and to all who helped organize and put on the regatta.

Until next year...
